Botox Explained

Botox is an injectable that doctors have been using for decades to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and smooth skin without plastic surgery. As one of the most widely researched medications worldwide, Botox was introduced to the cosmetic world in 1981 and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1989.

While most people receive Botox injections for rejuvenation on their face and neck, it is also an approved treatment for excessive sweating in areas such as the underarms, palms, and scalp and can treat muscle-related conditions.

What Is Botox Made Of?

Botox is a brand name for a generic drug known as botulinum toxin. This toxin is extracted from a bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum and purified to be safe for medical use.

Although the bacteria Clostridium botulinum can be harmful in its original state, the purified toxin that results is safe for medical use when administered by a certified and skilled dermatologist, nurse, or physician’s assistant.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Botox injections are most commonly used to smooth out age-related blemishes on the face and forehead. Common conditions that are treated include:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Forehead creases
  • Frown/smile lines
  • Crow’s feet (lines that occur around the corners of your eye)
  • Neck and chin lines
  • Upper and lower lip lines

How Does Botox Work?

Botox shots temporarily block nerve signals to specific muscles under the skin. This prevents these underlying muscles from contracting (or tensing up), which relaxes the wrinkles and fine lines in that area.

  • How much Botox you’ll be receiving
  • What to expect in terms of results

During Your Botox Injections Treatment

Botox treatments are quick and often painless. Many people assume Botox injections are painful because needles are involved, but the needles are very small. Some people may feel a slight pinch or sting, like getting a vaccine.

During the treatment itself, a cleanser will be applied to the treatment areas before injections are administered. Sometimes, specialists will also use ice or topical numbing creams as pain management methods to avoid discomfort.

The amount of Botox you receive and how long your appointment lasts will depend on the area(s) you’re having treated, but the entire process usually takes less than 20 minutes. Multiple areas can be treated in one session.

After Your Botox Treatment

Botox doesn’t require a recovery period, so you can return to your daily activities immediately following your appointment. Many people begin to notice a difference within the first week.

Aftercare

Your Botox specialist will provide you with clear aftercare instructions that will include the following precautions:

  • Avoid vigorous exercise: Wait at least 24 hours to hit the gym, as heavy exercise can spread your Botox to other body areas, making it less effective.
  • Use ice: Some people experience minor swelling, bruises, or redness in the treated area. If you experience this, you can use ice packs to help with discomfort. Just avoid applying pressure to the treatment area.
  • Wait before lying down: We recommend waiting a few hours after your treatment before lying down, as lying flat can disperse Botox from its intended area.
  • Wait to apply cosmetics or other skin treatments: Makeup and other skin treatments such as facials, massages, laser skin care, and more can impact the effectiveness of your treatment. Wait 24 hours to apply makeup and two days before scheduling other skin treatments.

Medications that may interact with Botox include certain antibiotics, blood thinners, muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory drugs, specific over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements. Your specialist will review your medications to ensure Botox treatments are safe for you.

The Difference Between Botox & Facial Fillers

While Botox is the most popular injectable in the fight against the appearance of wrinkles, it’s not the only one.
Many people mistakenly use the terms Botox and facial fillers interchangeably, but these treatments have some key differences.
The biggest differences between Botox vs. injectable fillers are where the injections are made and how they work.

  1. Botox is injected into the muscles surrounding the affected area, while facial fillers are injected underneath the skin.
  2. Botox minimizes wrinkles by keeping your muscles from contracting, while facial fillers add volume to your lines at rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Botox Reduce The Appetence of Wrinkles?

Botox is considered to be one of the most effective treatments for reducing wrinkles and fine lines. This success is shown in the satisfaction rate of past patients. One study found that more than 90% of Botox patients were satisfied with receiving a natural look within 30 days.

While Botox is highly effective for most people, it is possible for people to be immune to Botox injections and not see any results. This is extremely rare.

Is Botox Safe?

Cosmetic botox treatments are widely viewed as safe and have been approved by the FDA for over three decades. More than 4 million people, on average, receive Botox injections each year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This makes it one of the most commonly performed minimally invasive procedures.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

Our Los Angeles Botox treatments cost $12 per unit. The total cost of your Botox treatment will depend on how many units you receive, which typically depends on:

  • How advanced your lines and wrinkles are
  • Your injection sites
  • The results you want to achieve

Does Botox Have Any Side Effects?

Most people can easily tolerate Botox injections and recover quickly. Many patients report no side effects or discomfort at all. The most commonly reported side effects include minor symptoms such as:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Stinging
  • Dry skin

These side effects are temporary and typically resolve on their own.
To prevent any serious risks associated with Botox injections, always ensure your treatments are administered by a qualified and skilled healthcare professional who can prevent infections and other possible adverse events.

How Can I Maximize My Results?

Every patient and cosmetic concern is different, which means some people experience longer-lasting results than others. To maximize your Botox results, consider the following best practices:

  • Follow the specific aftercare instructions provided by our team.
  • Schedule regular Botox sessions every three to four months to maintain your results.
  • Don’t schedule Botox sessions too frequently, as your body may develop antibodies to the drug that can make it less effective.
  • Stay hydrated for healthier skin.
  • Avoid the sun as much as possible immediately following treatment.
  • Exercise your facial muscles to potentially speed up the effects of Botox and slow the appearance of aging.

Can You Stop Botox After You Start?

You can stop receiving Botox injections any time you’d like. Your results won’t disappear immediately, but your wrinkles and lines will slowly return over time. The worst that can happen is that your wrinkles and lines fully return.

Who Does Botox Work Best For?

Botox is approved for people 18 years and older and is regularly utilized by both women and men. Some people choose to start Botox in their 20s to help prevent wrinkles before they appear. Others start in their 40s or 50s to diminish the wrinkles and lines they’ve already developed.
The best time for you to get Botox will depend on your specific concerns and the results you’re trying to achieve. You may be a good candidate if you’re older than 18 and in generally good health.
