What is Botox

Botox is an injectable that doctors have been using for decades to smooth skin without plastic surgery. One of the most researched medications in the world, Botox was introduced to the cosmetic world in 1981 and FDA-approved in 1989.

While most people get Botox for face and neck rejuvenation, it’s also an approved treatment for excessive sweating in underarms, palms and scalp and for muscle related conditions.

What is Botox Made Of?

Botox is a brand name for a generic drug called botulinum toxin. This is a toxin from a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum and is purified for medical use.

While Clostridium botulinum bacteria is harmful in its natural state, the purified toxin is safe for medical use when administered by a board-certified and experienced dermatologist, nurse or physician’s assistant.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox shots temporarily block nerve signals to specific muscles under the skin. This stops those muscles from contracting (or tensing up) and relaxes the wrinkles and fine lines in that area.

Botox vs. Facial Fillers

While Botox is the most popular injectable in the fight against wrinkles, it’s not the only one.

Many people use the phrases ‘Botox’ and ‘facial fillers’ interchangeably, but these treatments actually have some differences.

The main difference between Botox vs. injectable fillers is where the injections are placed and how they work.

  1. Botox is injected into the muscles around the area, facial fillers are injected under the skin.
  2. Botox minimizes wrinkles by stopping your muscles from contracting, facial fillers add volume to your lines at rest.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Botox injections are most commonly used to smooth out age-related blemishes on the face and forehead. Conditions treated include:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Forehead creases
  • Frown/smile lines
  • Crow’s feet (lines around the corners of your eye)
  • Neck and chin lines
  • Upper and lower lip lines
  • Elevation of eyebrows
  • Lower face and neck
  • Bunny lines
  • Lip lines (Smoker’s lines)
  • Chin dimpling
  • Neck bands (Platysma bands)
  • Jawline slimming
  • Dimpled chin (Mentalis muscle)
  • Marionette lines
  • Gummy smile
  • Smoothing neckline

Before

Consultations Are Required

Your appointments should always start with reviewing your medical history and evaluating the areas to be treated. This ensures your injections will be the best and safest.

Your Medical History Includes

  • Medications you’re taking
  • Current and previous medical conditions
  • Surgical history
  • Previous similar treatments
  • Are you pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • Your beauty goals
  • Neuromuscular conditions
  • Skin infections
  • Problems swallowing or breathing
  • Weakness in your facial muscles
  • Short term illnesses
  • Allergies to medications

Our providers will have you make different facial expressions so they can see where your lines and wrinkles fall.

Your doctor will ask you questions about your concerns and treatment preferences. This will help us create a treatment plan to get what you want.

By the end of your consult, you’ll know the following:

  • Where you’ll be injected
  • How much Botox you’ll get
  • What to expect of results

During Your Botox Treatment

Botox Injection Bottle

Botox treatments are fast and often painless. Many people think Botox is painful because of the needles but the needles are very small. Some people may feel a tiny pinch or sting like getting a vaccine.

During the treatment itself, a cleanser will be applied to the treatment areas before injections are done. Sometimes specialists will also use ice or topical numbing creams as pain management to minimize discomfort.

The amount of Botox you’ll get and how long your appointment will be depends on the area(s) being treated, but the whole process will take less than 20 minutes. Multiple areas can be treated in one session.

After Your Botox Treatment

Botox doesn’t require downtime, so you can return to your daily activities right after your appointment. Many people start to see results within a week.

Aftercare

Your Botox specialist will give you aftercare instructions which will include the following:

  • Avoid vigorous exercise: Stay away from the gym and strenuous exercising for at least 24 hours. Exercising right after Botox injections can make the Botox spread out to other areas of your body, which will make it less effective.
  • Hold off on applying cosmetics or other skin treatments: Makeup and other skin treatments, such as facials, massages, laser skin care, and more, can affect Botox injections. Wait at least 24 hours to apply makeup and 2 days before scheduling any other skin treatments.
  • Wait a while before lying down: We recommend waiting a few hours after your treatment before lying down, as lying flat can disperse the Botox from the area where it’s intended to stay.
  • Apply ice: Some people may experience minor swelling, bruising, or redness. If this happens to you, you can use ice packs to help with discomfort and swelling. Apply the ice gently and be careful not to put pressure on the areas treated with Botox.

Medications that interact with Botox include certain antibiotics, blood thinners, muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins and supplements. Your specialist will review your medications to ensure Botox is safe and right for you.

Who is Botox For?

Botox is approved for people 18 and older and is used by both women and men. Some people start Botox in their 20s to prevent wrinkles before they appear, while others start later in life to target wrinkles after they show up

Can I Stop Botox After I Start?

You can stop getting Botox injections at any time. Your results won’t go away overnight, but your wrinkles and lines will come back over time. The worst that can happen is they come back full force.

Botox done for cosmetic purposes is both safe and has been approved by the FDA for over 30 years. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over four million people get Botox injections every year. Botox is one of the most commonly performed minimally invasive cosmetic procedures.

Does Botox Get Rid of Wrinkles?

Botox is one of the best treatments for wrinkles and fine lines. This is proven in patient satisfaction. One study found that over 90% of Botox patients felt natural looking within 30 days.

While Botox works for most people, some may be immune to Botox and not see any results. This is very rare.

How Can I Get the Best Results?

Every patient and concern is unique; some people see longer lasting results than others. To get the best Botox results:

  • Follow the aftercare instructions given by our team.
  • Get Botox every 3-4 months to maintain your results.
  • Don’t get Botox too often, your body can develop antibodies to the drug that can make it less effective.
  • Stay hydrated for healthy skin.
  • Avoid the sun as much as possible after treatment.
  • Exercise your facial muscles to potentially speed up the effects of Botox and slow down aging.
