Reduce Your Knee Pain With Botox

Posted on April 13, 2016 by Dr Elenora Fedoneko

For most people, Botox is synonymous with wrinkle treatment. Actually, this medication is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a variety of other uses. If you experience certain types of muscle pain or arthritis, Botox can help.

What is Botox?

Botox is the brand name of a medication containing botulinum toxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected, Botox temporarily paralyzes muscle activity. It is among the best-known and most-used cosmetic treatments in the world.

Arthritis Pain Relief

The world-renowned Mayo Clinic reports that participants in various – but relatively small – studies see improvement in their arthritis pain after Botox treatments. The medication blocks chemical signals between the brain and the nerves, resulting in pain reduction. A recent British study of 45 patients with severe knee pain caused by lateral patellofemoral overload syndrome – a common condition in athletes — found that one small Botox injection in conjunction with physical therapy helped 69 percent of the patients who participated in the study feel better.

When injected, Botox paralyzes a particular muscle, although other muscles in the area are unaffected. Those muscles continue to strengthen through exercise and normal physical activity. In the British study, one avid runner states that she has been pain-free for two years since her injection and is training for two marathons this year.

Other Botox Uses

Botox is the only FDA-approved treatment for prevention of chronic migraines in patients experiencing 15 or more such headaches monthly. It is also FDA-approved for treating:

  • Overactive bladder
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Eye muscle issues
  • Severe underarm sweating, or hyperhydrosis
  • Cervical dystonia – a painful condition where neck muscles involuntarily contract
  • Muscle stiffness in adults with lower or upper limb spasticity.
