The Science Behind Effective Laser Hair Removal

Posted on May 31, 2016 by Dr Elenora Fedoneko

Laser hair removal is the most effective way to remove unwanted hair. In some patients, laser hair removal is permanent, while others may require “touch-ups” annually. Although sessions you undergo for laser hair removal are quite straightforward, there’s a great deal of science behind the procedure. Laser is actually an acronym of “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation,” and the device releases light of a specific wavelength. Lasers weren’t originally used for the purpose of hair removal, but researchers noted in the 1970’s that using lasers for other medical uses resulted in hair loss.

Selective Photothermolysis

“Selective” indicates that the device can differentiate between your skin’s melanin and the melanin in the hair. Photothermolysis refers to light absorption by melanin, with the light changing to heat and destroying its target – hair follicle.

Hair Follicle Destruction

In order to eliminate hair follicles, the laser is calibrated to emit just the right amount of heat over certain period of time.

Advances in laser technology have minimized side effects, but they may still occur. That’s why it is crucial to have a licensed professional perform the laser hair removal procedure.

Multiple Sessions

You might wonder why you must return for several sessions for laser hair removal to be effective. That’s because laser can only destroy hair during its growth phase, so subsequent sessions target hair that was previously in the dormant phase. Number of treatments required depends on the individual and the hair growth rate. Sessions are generally scheduled a month apart.
