As a prominent facial feature, eyebrows can play an important role in overall facial symmetry and attractiveness. Drooping eyebrows can make you appear tired or sad, while a more elevated brow portrays a youthful appearance.

How Botox Can Improve Eyebrow Symmetry?

Surgery used to be the only solution for asymmetrical eyebrows. These days, Botox can be used to raise the eyebrow higher up or even lower the brow, if so desired. Botox is injected directly into the appropriate muscle depending on whether the eyebrow needs to be lowered or lifted. Injecting Botox into the forehead will drop the eyebrow down, and injecting it into the “squinting muscles” will pull the eyebrow up.

Does it Really Work?

A medical practitioner with in depth knowledge of the muscles surrounding the eye will be able to create a noticeable difference using Botox, especially for those with moderate asymmetry. You will be able to see the results around 3 days after the treatment and they will last about 3-4 months.

If you have ever had acne, you know how difficult it is not to pick at them. Unfortunately, improperly breaking the skin to remove the acne can cause deep facial scarring. Luckily, there are still a number of ways to improve the appearance of acne scars. We will discuss three procedures that are highly effective in treating acne scarring.

Skin Tightening – The Yag laser we use in our practice is a versatile machine that can treat pigmentation problems and tighten the skin for an overall improved appearance. The laser technician will use gentle settings to induce the formation of new collagen. Collagen is a primary contributor to maintaining youthfulness of your face as it gives the skin a plumped appearance and helps maintain its elasticity.

Chemical Peel – Chemical peel is a highly customizable procedure that can rejuvenate the skin and treat hyperpigmentation issues caused by acne. It is essential to choose an experienced aesthetic medicine practitioner to perform this procedure as they are responsible for determining the strength of the peel. I recommend starting with lighter peels such as SkinMedica’s Vitalize Peel and work your way up to more powerful Rejuvenize Peel. With this treatment plan patients usually see consistent results with minimal side effects.

Laser Skin Resurfacing – There are two types of lasers used for laser skin resurfacing treatments, ablative and non-ablative. Both types of lasers target the dermis layer of the skin to stimulate collagen formation. Ablative lasers destroy the epidermal layer of the skin to reach the dermis. Because of this, treatments with ablative lasers require a lot of downtime.
In our practice we use Palomar Starlux 1540 Fractional laser. It is a non-ablative system that uses laser energy to gently treat acne scarring and promote collagen formation.

The journey from your engagement to your wedding day can be a challenging time in your life. Brides-to-be often feel overwhelmed once they realize how limited a time they actually have to plan their wedding. Engaged couples absolutely need a team of friends and family to help them put together a perfect wedding.

A common mistake brides make during their wedding planning journey is having a limited view on what it takes to bring to life that perfect wedding day look. If you want to look like your best self on your wedding day, you will likely need some help from aesthetic medicine practitioners. These skincare specialists will do more for you than create the illusion of a flawless face; they can actually make you look younger and more beautiful. In our practice we worked extensively with brides to strategize and deliver the best results given the individual’s beauty goals and timeline. Here are two pre-wedding beauty treatments to try that can help bring forth an even more beautiful bride.

Botox
Botox is an excellent option for women who are concerned that wrinkles and facial lines will diminish their chance of looking their best on a wedding day. Botox is one of the most effective methods available to smooth facial lines, but it will take a couple of weeks to reveal full results of the treatment. Brides should have their first Botox session at least 5 months before their wedding day so that they have time to fine tune areas of the face that they would still like to improve.

IPL Photofacial
Your wedding day will be one of the most photographed days of your life. For women who want to remove the signs of sun damage so they could look flawless on their wedding photographs, we strongly recommend a series of IPL Photofacials. This advanced therapy uses light energy to eradicate sun spots, spider veins and pigment problems. For best results, we typically perform 2-3 treatment sessions approximately a month apart, and brides can usually see results after the 2nd treatment.

As temperatures go up, we turn to the beach for relief from the sweltering days of summer. However, soaking up the sun for extended periods of time can cause long lasting damage to your skin.  Excessive sun exposure can accelerate the signs of aging and make you vulnerable to developing certain kinds of cancer. Sunburns can also be quite a painful experience as your skin peels and blisters as it attempts to heal itself. In order to protect your skin, it is absolutely essential to wear sun protection when you are outdoors. Of course, I recognize that not all sun exposure is inherently bad for you. After all, our skin has the unique ability to convert UVB rays into a form of Vitamin D. Vitamin D isn’t readily available in most diets, and our bodies use it to strengthen bones and boost immunity.

If you have developed a sunburn, we recommend treating the burns immediately. As soon as you recognize that your skin feels painful and irritated, you should get out of the sun and apply a cold compress to the affected areas.  After waiting for a few minutes, apply an over the counter hydrocortisone cream to reduce swelling and inflammation. Over the next few days, keep your body hydrated with plenty of fluids and apply aloe vera directly onto the skin to soothe sunburned areas.

Following the combination of these steps will help alleviate the pain and irritation associated with sunburns. However, if you develop a sunburn, the true damage to the skin may not be visible immediately. Sun spots occur when melanin accumulates just underneath the skin surface, and over time it rises to the topmost layers of the skin.

IPL is one way you can treat the patches of brown discoloration caused by the sun. This therapy works by directing light energy at the unwanted pigment and it dramatically improves the clarity of your skin.

Lasers are revolutionizing the way men and women remove unwanted hair. Historically, hair removal tended to be both painful and damaging to the skin. For example, one of the ancient rituals involved the use of volcanic glass to scrape away hair at the skin’s surface. Over time hair removal techniques have become less invasive, but the process of removing hair is still a dreaded experience for millions of people. Lasers offer the opportunity to simplify your beauty routine and avoid the discomfort associated with traditional hair removal methods.

The first generation of laser hair removal equipment worked best for patients with lighter skin tones. Patients with darker skin tones were also more likely to develop side effects such as hyperpigmentation, and scarring. Luckily, with advances in technology, laser hair removal can now be done safely and effectively on all skin types. The Candela Yag system we use is excellent at permanently removing unwanted body hair following a series of quick and relatively painless treatments. This laser device works by focusing a beam of light on the skin’s surface to destroy unwanted hair follicles. This sought after laser treatment has been very effective at removing hair without damaging the surrounding tissue for both light and dark skin types.

Laser Hair Removal technology works by destroying the hair follicle through controlled bursts of high intensity light. You will need several treatments to reduce your unwanted body hair, but each session is relatively quick and we offer treatment packages to make the process more affordable. Our laser technician will work with you to make each treatment session as comfortable and effective as possible, but there are few things you can also do yourself to ensure optimal results.

1. Avoid sunbathing
Avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks prior to your treatment. Sunbathing makes your body more sensitive to heat, which in turn increases the possibility of burns and hyperpigmentation.

2. Avoid waxing and plucking
Do not wax or pluck your hair during the two weeks leading up to your treatment. Waxing and plucking interferes with the hair follicle’s growth cycle and may extend the number of sessions you need to achieve good results. We recommend that you shave the unwanted hair the day before your appointment to maximize the results of your treatment.

3. Avoid perfumes, deodorant, and lotions
Do not apply any moisturizing agents to the treated areas the day of your treatment as this can interfere with the laser’s ability to destroy hair follicles. The skin should also be cleaned thoroughly prior to your appointment.

Your skin is a reflection of your overall health, and if you want to look your best you need to nourish and protect your skin from the inside out.

Here are four simple methods to optimize your beauty regimen.

1. Sun Protection
Healthy skin is synonymous with beautiful skin, and if you want your skin to look its best it must be protected from excessive sun exposure. SkinMedica Daily Physical Defense Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30+ is an effective shield against the sun’s harmful rays. Applying a generous coat of this sunscreen everyday will help prevent painful sunburns and certain types of cancers.

2. Drink More Water
Increasing your water intake will leave your skin plump and make it look as if it’s lit from within. We recommend drinking 72 ounces of water throughout the day.

3. Cleanse
Glowing, gorgeous skin is just not possible without properly cleansing the skin on a daily basis. Oils and makeup can clog the pores and dramatically age your skin if they are left on it overnight. We recommend using a gentle, soap-free cleanser such as SkinMedica Facial Cleanser every evening.

4. Exfoliate
The summer heat is making its way toward Los Angeles, and the rising temperatures can wreak havoc on the skin. Your skin will want to protect itself from the heat and humidity by producing more oil in your sebaceous glands. However, the increase in oil production can also lead to a rise in acne. Exfoliating regularly will help keep pores open and remove the dead skin cells that lead to a dull complexion. We love using the Skinmedica AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser to remove impurities and improve skin tone and texture.
