Most of us would love to look younger, but for many patients safety concerns prevent them from doing cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX.

The truth is, BOTOX is very safe and it’s universally recognized as a minimally invasive and effective treatment. Let’s try addressing some of your concerns regarding Botox injections:

Isn’t BOTOX a neurotoxin?

Yes. However, that does not mean that it is dangerous. BOTOX is a toxin produced by the bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. It relaxes facial muscles, which helps smooth wrinkles. The dose is tiny and the injections are very localized.

Will BOTOX make my face numb?

BOTOX doesn’t affect nerves that perceive sensations like touch, heat or cold. You should never lose feeling in the area that has been treated.

Does getting BOTOX hurt?

Most patients describe the sensation as a mild pinching. The procedure takes less than 20 minutes and discomfort is minimal.

Are there any side effects?

Occasional redness or mild swelling at the injection sites are most common side effects. This usually resolves within a few hours.

Is there anything I can do to reduce side effects?

A week before your BOTOX treatment, please avoid using Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, aspirin and other NSAIDS such as Advil, for example. Taking these supplements and over the counter medications increases the risk of bruising. You should also avoid alcohol one week before and one week after your procedure. Also, please do not lie down for three to four hours or touch the area for about six hours after Botox injections.
