In the 1950s, doctors discovered that injecting small amounts of botulinum toxin into the muscular tissue caused its paralysis. Subsequently botulinum toxin was developed for experimental use in the laboratory animals. (more…)

Most of us would love to look younger, but for many patients safety concerns prevent them from doing cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX.
The truth is, BOTOX is very safe and it’s universally recognized as a minimally invasive and effective treatment. Let’s try addressing some of your concerns regarding Botox injections:
Isn’t BOTOX a neurotoxin?
Yes. However, that does not mean that it is dangerous. BOTOX is a toxin produced by the bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. It relaxes facial muscles, which helps smooth wrinkles. The dose is tiny and the injections are very localized.
Will BOTOX make my face numb?
BOTOX doesn’t affect nerves that perceive sensations like touch, heat or cold. You should never lose feeling in the area that has been treated.
Does getting BOTOX hurt?
Most patients describe the sensation as a mild pinching. The procedure takes less than 20 minutes and discomfort is minimal.
Are there any side effects?
Occasional redness or mild swelling at the injection sites are most common side effects. This usually resolves within a few hours.
Is there anything I can do to reduce side effects?
A week before your BOTOX treatment, please avoid using Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, aspirin and other NSAIDS such as Advil, for example. Taking these supplements and over the counter medications increases the risk of bruising. You should also avoid alcohol one week before and one week after your procedure. Also, please do not lie down for three to four hours or touch the area for about six hours after Botox injections.

Do Men Get BOTOX Too?
For years, many have assumed that BOTOX is something that only women do. And, it’s correct to an extent: only about seven percent of BOTOX patients are men. However, more and more men are getting interested in BOTOX. A few of the reasons:
Looking younger gives you a competitive edge.
Studies show that men who appear younger are more likely to get hired.
There’s less stigma attached to men getting cosmetic procedures.
In the past, it was considered effeminate for men to do cosmetic procedures. As women’s roles have changed, men have realized that they do not need to restrict themselves in this area.
BOTOX is quick and easy.
BOTOX can be administered in about 15 minutes and results are usually seen within 10-14 days. Very few patients experience side effects, and the ones that do occur are mild.
BOTOX is cost-effective.
While prices vary throughout the country, average price for a unit in Los Angeles is $9-$14. Most patients need approximately 20 units to eliminate frown lines.

Botox injections are one of the most common cosmetic procedures worldwide. However, just because they are readily available does not mean that every practitioner who performs them is the same. There’s a lot to consider when you are trying to pick a provider who could give you great results with minimal risk:
1. Do not go to a home Botox party.
A party is not likely to be a sterile environment, so it brings a risk of infection. If you are at someone’s home instead of a licensed facility, you will not be able to get help quickly enough in the unlikely (but still possible) event of a complication or an allergic reaction.
2. Aestheticians are not permitted to give Botox in California.
Here in Los Angeles, we have some of the most stringent rules in the nation to assure that Botox and other cosmetic treatments are performed safely. If your provider is not a physician or a nurse working under the supervision of one, he or she is not legally
qualified to give you Botox treatments.
3. Pick the practitioner people trust.
Study reviews before settling on a Botox provider. A good practitioner will have positive reviews from a large number of patients, going back several years.
